Connect a 0-15 volt DC voltmeter to the battery. Positive lead to the positive terminal and the negative lead to ground. The engine should be warm not hot ( the radiator fan should not be running. Turn the head light dimmer switch to high. Start the motor and rev the motor to 5000 RPM.

Troy Jollimore. 4080 posts · Joined 2013. #3 · Apr 26, 2021. The starter button merely triggers a relay by your battery that supplies the big power to your starter. Those relays, or solenoids, can go bad, but then the engine won’t crank at all. If it’s trying to start, then it’s getting power.
